Synopsis
In the quirky action-comedy The Second Is a Christian (1985), we dive into the chaotic world of Kyoko, a beautiful nun caught in a comedic tug-of-war between two very different suitors. On one side, there's Haruhiko, the carefree yakuza gangster poised to inherit the somewhat dysfunctional Tenryu Gumi gang. Despite their criminal undertakings, this ragtag group is surprisingly gentle, unified by their Christian values. On the other side is the hapless yet earnest police detective Kumashiro, whose bumbling attempts to win Kyoko's affection often land him in absurd predicaments. The film cleverly juxtaposes the lightheartedness of the Tenryu Gumi’s antics against the sinister backdrop of their rivals, the Kuroiwa Gumi, led by the ruthless godfather Kuroiwa.
As the story unfolds, viewers are treated to a delightful blend of action and comedy, highlighting themes of love, loyalty, and the unexpected beauty of faith amidst chaos. The dynamics between Kyoko, Haruhiko, and Kumashiro add a rich layer of humor and heart, as each character navigates their own motivations and desires in a world where crime and kindness coexist. With its unique premise and charmingly flawed characters, The Second Is a Christian offers a refreshing take on the action-comedy genre, making it a memorable watch for those who appreciate a mix of laughter, romance, and a touch of moral reflection.
