Synopsis

In the 1978 comedy The Contract, we follow the misadventures of Chih-Wen, a struggling actor portrayed by Michael Hui, who finds himself trapped in a seemingly endless cycle of disappointment. Bound by an oppressive eight-year contract with MTV Studios, his dreams of stardom have been stifled, leaving him with just one lackluster performance to show for it. When a rival company dangles a lucrative five-year deal in front of him, Chih-Wen realizes he must break free from his current shackles. With the help of his eccentric, aspiring scientist brother (Ricky Hui) and a charismatic magician named Shih-Chieh (Sam Hui), the trio concocts an elaborate plan to steal the contract from Chih-Wen's ruthless manager, leading to a series of comedic yet heartfelt escapades.

The film deftly explores themes of ambition, loyalty, and the often absurd lengths one must go to in pursuit of their dreams. Chih-Wen's journey is not merely about escaping a bad contract; it's a reflection on the challenges faced by artists in a cutthroat industry, where the promise of success can be as fleeting as a good punchline. The dynamic between the brothers adds both comedic relief and emotional depth, as they navigate their contrasting aspirations and familial bonds. With its clever blend of humor and social commentary, The Contract remains a charming snapshot of the struggles faced by creatives, making it a timeless tale that resonates with anyone who has dared to dream big.
