Synopsis
In the 2007 action-comedy film Sumolah, we follow the misadventures of Ramlee (Afdlin Shauki), a hapless Malay boy who is perpetually unable to hold down a job, much to the chagrin of his mother (Kartina Aziz). Desperate and broke, Ramlee stumbles into a sushi restaurant run by the eccentric Honda (Patrik Teoh), where he faces off in a sushi challenge that he ultimately fails. Instead of being shown the door, he finds himself reluctantly working at the restaurant to repay his debts. This quirky twist of fate introduces him to a colorful cast of characters, including his fellow staff members Haris (Awie) and Andy (Radhi Khalid), as they navigate the chaos of the culinary world together.
As Ramlee delves deeper into his new role, he discovers that a part of his employment involves participating in the Malaysia Sushi Association Amateur Sumo Wrestling Championships—a hilariously unexpected turn that blends the worlds of sushi and sumo in a way that’s both outrageous and entertaining. This film not only serves up laughter but also explores themes of perseverance, friendship, and the determination to find one's place in the world. With a lighthearted approach, Sumolah invites viewers to cheer for Ramlee as he transforms from an aimless dreamer into a spirited contender, proving that even the most unlikely heroes can rise to the challenge when the stakes are high—and the sushi is on the line.
