Synopsis

In the whimsical comedy-drama Princess Toyotomi, released in 2011, a trio of auditors from Tokyo finds themselves embroiled in an unexpected adventure as they descend upon Osaka to investigate the city’s financial practices. Led by the diligent Hajime Matsudaira, played by Shinichi Tsutsumi, this team, which includes the spirited Tadako Torii (Haruka Ayase) and the charming Asahi Gainsbourg (Masaki Okada), initially approaches their task with a straightforward mindset. However, their journey takes a turn into the fantastical when they stumble upon the Karahori shopping district, an area steeped in rich history and local lore that transports them beyond mere numbers and spreadsheets.

As the auditors delve deeper, they uncover not just financial discrepancies but also a tapestry of community spirit and traditional values that resonate with the very heart of Osaka. The film cleverly juxtaposes the mundane world of bureaucracy with the colorful, exuberant culture of the city, inviting viewers to ponder the relationship between governance and local identity. With its blend of humor, enchanting moments, and a touch of fantasy, Princess Toyotomi deftly explores themes of loyalty, heritage, and the importance of community, making it a delightful watch for those who enjoy films that balance lightheartedness with deeper social commentary.
