Synopsis

In the whimsical comedy Marsal, released in 1999, we follow the misadventures of Stipan, a weary policeman sent to a quaint Adriatic island to investigate a series of bizarre occurrences that have left the local residents in a state of fear and confusion. Upon arrival, Stipan quickly realizes that the island's eerie happenings are attributed to the ghost of Josip Broz Tito, the iconic leader of former Yugoslavia. Initially met with skepticism and resistance from the tight-knit community, Stipan's determination to uncover the truth leads him into a peculiar blend of supernatural mystery and political satire.

As the story unfolds, Stipan navigates the absurdities of island life where the mayor, Luka, sees an opportunity to capitalize on the ghostly legend by transforming the locale into a Tito-themed amusement park, a move that draws both laughter and eye-rolling from the locals. Meanwhile, Tito's former WW2 veterans become embroiled in their own beliefs, perceiving the apparition as a call to arms for a new Communist revolution. Marsal deftly intertwines humor with poignant reflections on nostalgia, identity, and the remnants of a political past, making it a delightful watch for those who appreciate clever satire wrapped in the whimsical charm of a small-town comedy. With a solid IMDb rating of 7.2, this film manages to captivate audiences with its unique premise and memorable characters, making it a hidden gem worth exploring.
